Beer Book Club - Pairing!

  • 2014 West Division Street Chicago, IL, 60622 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Hi Chicago!

Welcome to the best club, beer book club! What is it and how does it work? It’s simple, on some sort of frequency, we gather to enjoy delicious beer, food, and company (no cannibalism allowed)! There’s themes to keep it interesting, and this first theme is pairing. So on to the logistics.

Where is it? Ethan’s apartment. Basically Damen and Division (Wicker Park).

RSVP and I’ll send you the address if you need it as well as a code to get you through the front door. There’s parking nearby, but given we’ll all be drinking, I recommend public transit, Uber, etc. If you have a DD and want parking instructions, I have a super helpful map type thing I can share

What to bring: please bring a sharable quantity of beer, paired with a sharable quantity of whichever snack, food, dessert, Michelin starred deconstructed play on Doritos, etc. Feel free to go as all-out or partially out as you wish. As for specific quantity of beer to bring, it often depends on what sort of beer it is. No need to bring 12 Bourbon County Stouts, 1 (or 2) is usually fine. Sharable quantity (and if it’s a 500ml or 750 bottle, we’ll just do small pours). What ever you bring will be fine, and if you’re in doubt, feel free to bring extra! 🍻

What to expect: It’s a beer tasting/enjoying time. You can taste as much or as little as you’d like, you can select a record (or bring one to spin)(I also have a CD player if your favorite tunes are on CD), and we might all even learn a thing or two!

Should I eat beforehand? Yeah, probably. I’ll provide snacks, and everyone should bring some pairings with their beer, but no one should drink on an empty stomach.

Do I have to read a book?!? (What if that’s difficult for me?): Nope! I have a tasting notebook, and you can bring yours if you’d like. But no book is required. If you are interested in reading a book, I recommend “The Expanse” series as well as the “Aubrey-Maturin” series. These almost certainly won’t come up during our evening*.

What if I don’t want to drink? That’s fine! There’s snacks and fun people! I’ll also be providing some non-alcoholic beverage options (generally a non-caffeinated iced tea, but let me know what you’d like and we’ll make it happen).

Can I bring my partner(s)? Sure! Just let me know they’re coming so I can have a head count (another plug to RSVP)

I don’t know what beer to pick or how to pair that with food ☹️: This is an easy one. Head to your local bottle shop and ask them! Tell them you’re going to a fun beer tasting party and have them do the work, you can pair a beer with another beer/creative option, you can ask me, or another fabulous option is to just bring a beer you like along with a snack you like and insist they’re the best weird pairing we’ve never thought of! You might even start a new trend!

Bottle shop recs:

  • Liquor Park

  • The Beer Temple

  • Your local brewery

  • Garfield’s/Binny’s (they usually have a ‘person good at beer’ on staff)

Can I bring a cider? ….Get out… 😜 But yeah, that’s totally fine, as is sake, mead, braggot, gruit, or anything else you think is worthy of sharing. I’d be impressed if you find any of those later ones! Please shy away from macro light lagers (i.e. Budweiser, Miller, Yuengling), seltzers, and canned cocktails. Same for malt liquor, though if you want to sit in a corner and drink Hurricane High Gravity, we can all make a fun game out of that and I can share lots of details of how it’s made.

I bake THE BEST sourdough (or make[fill in the blank]): Cool! Bring that!

I have an allergy or some other need: Let me know how I can help/accommodate. There’s lots of gluten free options if that’s something that’s important to you and I’m happy to advise.

I forgot what beer looks like: Don’t worry, there’s some examples below

*Unless you want to talk about The Expanse or the Aubrey-Maturin series…🚀⛵

Beer Book Club - Housewarming

Hey friends, I just moved, so let’s warm my house on up with a Beer Book Club.

What is Beer Book Club you ask? We pick a beer topic, and all bring some beers that exemplify this topic to taste, share, and enjoy! To keep it nice and simple this time around, please bring a European or European Style beer. This can be a German Lager, Belgian Blonde, Trappist beer, English Dark Mild, or whatever you enjoy. Please bring enough to share (I find a 4 or 6 pack equivalent is often enough). Don’t like beer? That’s fine, bring a cider or something you do enjoy and we’ll make it work. Total Wine, The Wine and Cheese Place, or your favorite bottle shop are all good places to explore. Don’t know what to get? Ask a store attendant or text me and we’ll figure it out!

I’ll be providing some snacks, but you’re welcome to bring some dippables or other things to share.

Also no need to get any house warming gifts, but if you feel the weight of the social contract to bring something, check out a little wish list I put together (but seriously, no expectations)

There’s lots of street parking, but I recommend parking a few houses up the street (East) since the parking is wider there. See ya soon!

Neighborhood Bar Crawl

Update: there is now a theme. The theme is….Exxtra!! Whatever that means to you, do it exxtra.

Turns out there’s a ton of neighborhood bars! Let’s go visit them! Maybe a drink in each? There’s lots of free, unpermited parking in my neighborhood (on Charleston St and others, look for signs), but I totally recommend ride share or public transit. I’m close to the Western Blue Line station.

Here’s the tentative schedule:

Update, we’re probably starting around noon or so, so everything will shift down. Also maybe mid pub crawl sandwiches! 🥪🥳

  • 10:00 am Meet up at Ethan’s apartment, I’ll make breakfast!

  • 11:00 The Leavitt Street Inn and Tavern (they have food if you miss breakfast)

  • 11:45 (or whatever) The Corner Bar

  • 12:30 Web Pub Bucktown

  • 1:15 Jack and Ginger’s (they have food); The Map Room is across the street, they do great beer if we want to also go there. The Map Room has coffee

  • 2:00 The Charleston

  • Optional coffee at Red June Cafe (closes at 3pm)

  • Maybe a frisbee interlude at the neighborhood park

  • 3:00 O’s Tap (cash only)

  • 5:00 (if we make it this far) Gallery Cabaret

  • 6:00 Bed time…or Chef’s Special for a cocktail and Chinese food

Here’s a map list of all the spots!

Paint Night!

Look at those happy little trees!

Have you ever wanted to paint just like our friend Robert Rosenstein (or Bob Ross as his friends call him)? Well I have paint, I have a few canvases, and we can make it happen!

We can even put on a Bobert Rossi episode if y’all want. I find it’s also fun to pick a theme and see what happens from there. It’s for fun, not displaying in the MOMA.

I’ll have beer and other beverages. Feel free to bring some snacks. If you feel compelled to bring beverages (because society has conditioned us to bring gifts when we go places), bring a small amount of very good stuff, rather than a lot of the regular good stuff…seriously, I have a fridge full of booze 🍻🍻🍻🍻

See ya there!

Who: You, your plus one, and all of us

What: Painting time!

Where: Ethan’s house in Bucktown (near the Blue Line, there’s street parking)

When: Thursday at 7:30 or whenever you can come over…just text me

Why: Painting is great!

  • Coco Nib G&T, cuz now this is just getting silly

  • Lemongrass and Chili G&T, maybe? Sure! Why not?!

Beer Book Club: Summer Sippin'

  • 3112 S Durango Ave Los Angeles United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS
This is a summer sip

This is a summer sip

Welcome to the Summer Sip

Beer Book Club will return with the Summer Sip. This one is totally happening for realsies! Let me know if you can make it so I can get a head count.

What is Beer Book Club (BBC)?

This is a great opportunity to hang out with friends, taste some beer, and enjoy yourself. It’s a semi-guided, pot luck beer tasting where we all learn a thing or two about a thing or two! Here’s how it works.

  • You bring some beer that fits the theme

    • How much beer? Enough to share with the group…6ish generally does it, but if it’s something nice and comes in a 4 pack, that’s fine. If it’s something that comes in a 22oz bottle, that’s cool too (maybe consider 2). If it’s something exquisite that comes in a single 11.2 oz bottle, that’s fine as long as I get to taste some 😊. Remember, sharing is caring!

  • Everyone brings beer in this theme and we try to try them all

  • I’ll provide some snacks, but if you’re in the mood for anything specific, bring it!

  • I’ll have a tasting notebook, feel free to bring/start yours

  • I’ll provide some beer tasting notes, we’ll all pretend these are super insightful

The theme: Summer Sip

This BBC theme is Summer Sip. Bring a beer that reminds you of summer. If you had a beer that was ‘Sandals’ themed, that’s summer too! You can bring a beer named after someone named Summer, you can bring a beer that has “Summer” in the name, you can bring 6 different beers that spell out “S.U.M.M.E.R,” you can even bring a beer that reminds you of winter (but is from FL where it’s always summer). Get creative with it.

Only rule: please nothing from beer sales. Second ‘only rule:’ bring what you like and, when in doubt, make up an excuse as to why it fits the theme.

Here are some Summer Beers to get you inspired

The logistics

This event will be hosted at my (new to me) apartment, address in the event details. Street parking is fine, but limited. Uber/carpool may be the way to go, especially if you want to drink beverages. Apartment is shoes off.

Got any more questions, just ask!

Beer Book Club: Turkey Time!

IMG_20190802_180843.jpg

Welcome to Beer Book Club, Turkey Time!

What is Beer Book Club? Basically it’s a great beer hangout! About once a month, I’ll convene the book club membership for an evening of beer sharing and hanging out. Literacy is not required, but it helps make getting the details a lot easier.

RSVP: https://www.facebook.com/events/529947284487676

FAQ:

How it works:

Each month, I’ll pick a beer theme. These themes range from literal (English beers, Pale Ales, Lagers, etc.) to esoteric (turkey time, sidekick beers, flower power, etc.). I’ll grab some beers that meet the theme, and all the attendees bring their interpretation of the theme. The result is a wide range of beers and a lot of delicious tasting to do.

FAQs

What book should I read?

There’s no assigned book or reading. We meet regularly, like a book club, and I have a tasting notebook. You’re welcome to bring your own notebook and taste along.

What do I bring?

Bring some beer (I recommend a 4 or 6 pack), I’ll provide some snacks. Since beer comes in many formats, from singles to crowlers, just remember you’re bringing enough to share. We’re all going to sip and taste, so having a few for the group means everyone can experience the beer, but everyone is bringing some of their own, so no need to bring gallons yourself. However, if you feel like bringing lots of beer, I promise no one will complain!

Can I bring something that isn’t beer?

Sure, why not! Mead, cider, braggots, grafs, perrys, and other delicious libations are always welcome. Let me know if it contains any allergens so I can make sure everyone has a good time.

Turkey Time isn’t a beer. I’m confused. Help!

This is an esoteric theme, so let it inspire your selection. Feel free to bring a beer that reminds you of Thanksgiving, a beer brewed in Turkey with thyme (Turkey Thyme? Get it? 😂😪), a cranberry beer, a beer that pairs well with Wild Turkey Whiskey, or you can even bring 6 beers that spell out T.U.R.K.E.Y. As long as you’re bringing a good beer, it’ll be fine 😁🍻

Should I eat beforehand?

Yes! I’ll provide some light bites and snacks, but not a full meal for everyone. Make sure to drink responsibly, and that starts with not drinking on an empty stomach.

Can I bring a friend?
Sure, but please check with me first. I’m space (and chair) limited, and I want everyone to be comfortable, so let me know if you have a +1 so I can get a head count.
